Don't Throw Your Resume Around!
by Susan Reynolds

Wait. You're not supposed to send or take your resume everywhere your shoe leather can take you, and hand it to everyone who'll take it? You're not supposed to flood anyone's inbox with your unsolicited document?

No.

First of all, you've got to do your homework. Where are the organizations that ought to need someone with your skills? Have you used logic to discern that an opportunity at one organization indicates that similar opportunities might exist at similar organizations?

So now you're determined to prospect. That DOESN'T mean that you just send your resume unsolicited to every organization you've identified. Be more strategic. It DOESN'T mean that you carry your resume at your side at all times, handing it out willy-nilly to everyone who'll shake your hand! Be more strategic.

Use your networking skills to identify potential needs at organizations and to gain connections as well as recommendations. Many people might say, "Send me your resume and I'll pass it around." That all sounds so kind, but many best intentions just end up in a stack on the back of their desk or lost in their email inbox stream! Try instead to really develop a working relationship with your contact. They'll be more useful to you if they suggest contacts for you to pursue, which you can follow yourself, taking the action item for yourself instead of being another item in their "to do" list!

So, no. Don't just send and hand your nice resume everywhere you turn. Strategy and follow up will be your ticket to success!
