Negotiating the Career You Need!
by Susan Reynolds

Don't Be Blind to Career Opportunity!

In this time of economic strife, it's sometimes quite difficult to imagine having any opportunity to negotiate a positive career arrangement. But just recently, I've seen exactly just such a winning and mutually-agreeable negotiaton! It took weeks to achieve, with many steps, many conversations, a lot of planning and a lot of strategy.

So how can you create a winning opportunity for yourself? Let's look at the steps:

  1. Develop a core toolbox of support documents for yourself: a great resume, a catchy LinkedIn profile; all the items you'll need to promote your skills to a potential organization.

  2. Identify the possible sources of opportunity. Where are leads potentially going to originate?

  3. Scan and evaluate opportunities from every angle in a disciplined and organized way. Don't look in just one place, from just one source: opportunity could come from almost anywhere!

  4. Progress through interviewing with more than one opportunity at a time. How to do that? By creating such energy in your job search that multiple conversations occur simultaneously.

  5. Know what you want. What is the work / life balance that is your optimal goal? If you don't ask for it, you can't get it, and if you don't know what you want, how can you ask for it?

  6. Exercise evaluation as you interview as to just how flexible your target might be. With some judicious questioning, you'll detect their flexibility.

  7. Wrangle a great deal, or at least something close to what you need! If you've demonstrated what a great job you'll do for an organization, and the reliability of your services, most good organizations will be pleased to accommodate an excellent hire.

So I've seen it done, and done well, even in this difficult market: great pay for a flexible work / life balance, and a great chance to contribute. Don't give up, but do the work that gets you there!
