Job Search Magic
by Susan Reynolds

Everyone is looking for magic. It's there. It's available. It's just not as easy as many probably hope. So what makes for magic in your job search? Where's that pot of gold at the end of the job search rainbow? Here are tips for magical career success!

First, do a really good inventory of your connections. Many people think that they are not well connected. That may be true if you have not judiciously worked to locate and establish a large network of like-minded professionals. That doesn't mean it's not possible, it just means you'll have to expend some effort to nurture productive connections as quickly as possible for your immediate needs.

Make sure you can offer help as well as ask for help. Many job seekers feel embarrassed in asking for assistance, not only from strangers but even from (or maybe especially from) their friends and family. Well don't act needy then! Give some thought to your possibilities of offering assistance to those with whom you're connecting… not just from the perspective of your value as an employee but how about for their own careers, or the causes they care about.

Connections come from other connections, and those connections will lead to more connections. Not every connection will immediate reap obvious results. But if you mine your resources, day after day, year after year, always offering just as much help as you're requesting, then the people you need when you need them will be right at your side, ready to pitch in!

If you don't know how to connect with the people you need, then reach out for help! Learn to present yourself at your best. Learn to advocate for yourself. If you don't know quite how to quickly explain your abilities, either in an interview or even to a casual connections, then that should be a top action item to generate the job search magic you seek!
