What, No Interviews?
by Susan Reynolds

I'm frequently struck by the number of job seekers who are struggling to achieve career success, lost in endless frustration at answering on-line job postings. They'll answer tens, even hundreds, of postings with little to no positive results.

There are a series of explanations and unintended outcomes that happen along the way, especially when one's job search is not well planned or executed.

No interviews. You're hearing virtually nothing... radio silence... a vast wasteland of no answer of any kind, or maybe even worse, immediate rejection. Why is your job search attracting nothing?

Unwanted interviews. These are the invitations to interview for commission sales for organizations which may indeed be able to boast a few top earning performers, but with whom the average income is little to nil. Why is your job search attracting these responses?

Overqualified. These are the interviews from which you're sure you've been eliminated for being too old. You're told you're overqualified. It's really probably that you're not too old, but perceived as too expensive. The organization thinks you'll leave as soon as a higher paying job becomes available to you. Why is your job search attracting these responses?

This is all so frustrating and discouraging! While answering postings may seem like the most proactive way to find an opportunity, and many people are working hours upon hours each day pounding away on their keyboard, it's relationships that are winner most often. It's still hard work, but the probability is much better that you'll land a great interview for truly the right job for your career.
