Where Are the Interviews?
by Susan Reynolds

So you've got a resume you think is the "ticket". You spend hours upon hours combing the Internet. You've got every single possible job site posted to your favorites bar. Your index finger is calloused from pounding the "send" button. Your family is amazed and impressed with your diligence and determination, and they bring you snacks at your computer to keep you strong. The offers for interviews are lined up in your inbox. You are working your job search absolutely as hard as anyone possibly can, right?

Wrong! (But you saw that coming didn't you?) But the sad irony is that many, many job seekers are stressing themselves out and getting further, further depressed by a lack of results from a career search strategy that was stacked against them from the get go!

Instead, think like a business development professional. How does one close a deal on an opportunity? By making the best presentation to a decision-maker. How does one get in front of a decision-maker? By aggressively wiggling past all the non-decision makers until they can finally talk to someone that matters. How does one get in those doors? By indentifying just which doors upon which to knock in the first place!

So let Sparky the Computer do its job as a great research tool and get to work on knowing just which organizations are targets that make sense for your career. Get help to make the contacts you need with people who can influence your future. Be prepared to have an intelligent conversation about those people and those organizations. Be prepared to present how your skills are the right answer to the business challenges they face.

In other words, get out from behind the computer and get out in the real world of real people who are making the business decisions of your future.
