The Offer You Donít Want!
by Susan Reynolds

Indeed! Still in this challenging market, there are many professionals who are garnering more than one job offer, more than one career opportunity. However, the bounty of choice often leads to the difficulty of choice. There is almost never a clean and easy answer to just which move to make. What are some of the determining factors? Surprise: itís almost never just about money, or shouldnít be anyway.

So here are a number of tips in making what may be a critical career decision, from which you might reap the rewards of future growth or the disaster of getting stuck on a rotten path. Itís probably complex and unclear!

So ask yourself a set of questions. Is this an opportunity to step into a new and growing industry? (I recently assisted an executive whose industry shift was probably the worst thing he could have done in our current market situation, and it took him some real work to reposition himself!) Will there be upward promotional possibilities? Will there be a chance to learn and firm up a skill set thatís been missing from your resume? Will you have a title that is itself marketable? (Iíve seen an executive recently enter a position that should be very strategically marketable on into the future.)

Conversely, many professionals are struggling to decide among offers for which the compensation is not optimum. The decision is unclear. Is it better to wait and keep marketing, taking a pass on underemployment? Often the decision hangs in strategic marketing. The job seeker may in fact not have really aggressively penetrated potential markets. Make sure your marketing is comprehensive and multi-faceted!
