Career-Building Intuition
by Susan Reynolds

Do you think your career obstacles are due to lack of opportunity? Iíd like to consider, however, that a good many career obstacles are caused by lack of insight. The job searcher is not using all of the tools available. Thus, opportunities are limited and obstacles are in the way. Iíve seen so many people whose futures could have more growth if they could be more analytical, diagnostic and prognostic. So here are a few tips to tune up your career intuition. In other words, a bit of a how-to in getting out of your own way!

If youíre currently employed and seeking promotional opportunities, you need to fine tune your radar! Whatís happening at your organization? What are the challenges and situations? How might your talents be useful in a way that your management hasnít realized? Donít sit back, silent, and wait for someone to wake up to the fact that you could help! Maybe they donít know the scope of what you could be offering, or maybe theyíve forgotten. Donít expect your management to remember every line of your old resume! Carefully strategize a plan to approach decision-makers and mentors in your organization to proactively discuss your potential to contribute.

If youíre job-searching, the same need for intuition and insight exists. Your success depends on scoping out an organization with an inquisitive mindset. What do you know about their business? What positions are likely to exist within their organization chart? Just as mentioned above, what can you conjecture about the probable needs within their structure? Then you can fire up your networking, while still being on the look-out for announcements.

The main point here is to not wait. Donít be passive. Donít be dependent on someone elseís action. ThinkÖ and move forward! Your career will thank you!
