How to Kick Your Career into Gear!
by Susan Reynolds

Economic news releases have held an ever so slight hint of positive employment news! Almost a quarter million jobs have been added to the economy, apparently prevalently in the private sector. Dare we think that happier employment days are around the corner? Some people who had given up on their job searches altogether have dusted off their resumes and fired up their search engines! (But many of you have never stopped searching, right?)

So let’s take a moment to make sure that you’re ready to be competitive in this hopefully awakening market! (Or if we choose to be pessimistic: to be competitive in however difficult the market continues to be!)

Prepare a series of profiles about yourself, so you’re ready to introduce yourself any time you meet new people, or interview. Networking works remarkably well when you can clearly define what you can do, where you might fit, and how you’re better capable than your competitors! Most of us have several angles from which we can promote ourselves, several distinct areas of expertise or interest, so more than one profile will almost certainly be necessary.

Take the time to commit your “banter” to memory, so that you can comfortably talk about yourself while seamlessly chatting, listening, and learning about the other people with whom you’re conversing. Rehearsing with family and close friends can give the experience you need and work out the “kinks” in your explanation of yourself. Even the most senior professionals can have trouble communicating their strengths to strangers, so no matter your career level, be prepared!
