IS YOUR NEXT CAREER MOVE PLANNED?

by Susan Reynolds

Current research says that about a third of us are happy and well settled in what we're doing. The second third is actively unhappy and/or currently looking for new work. The final third is contemplating a change, but not taking current action. Which category fits you? Here are some tips for ALWAYS being ready to make a move.

Network all the time, everywhere you go. We could tell countless stories of people landing great opportunities from contacts they did not directly expect to make, nor were they in response to a specific job posting. Donít contact your associates only in desperation, but keep them up to date and accustomed to hearing from you. Keep your resume up to date and proactive. Is the document marketing you strongly? Does it take you backwards, returning to the same old type of job you've found frustrating? It needs to be honest and effective. Do you know your monetary worth in the job market? What about different titles, and different industries? Have a good idea what a successful negotiation should net in a compensation package. Have your references prepared to talk about you positively. Do you know what they'd really say, and are you sure the results would be to your benefit? If you're currently working, are you prepared to graciously step out of the organization without having "burnt bridges"? Put a plan in place to know that everywhere you've been will be the better for having had you as a member of the team, and sorry to see you go when you move on to new opportunities.

Then, what's your next move going to be?
