January 2009 I made a pact with my son years ago that I would listen to the music which he likes, if he’d try the older stuff that I’ve loved since being a teenager. Thus, I recently attended the Metallica concert at the Los Angeles Forum. What’s Metallica got to do with job search? It’s not so much what DID happen, as what DIDN’T. Make sure you use action words that bring your capabilities to life. State your expertise. Incorporate a hint of the passion you can bring to your work. Speak about the target audience and industry you can serve. Use almost any situation to visit with other people about careers. Don’t be obnoxious, but definitely don’t be shy! Strike up conversation, and share stories. Ask what they do, and what projects they’re currently pursuing, then be ready to talk about your career and desires as well. If you’re persistent, you won’t be left sitting on the sidelines when new and exciting opportunities are available! (And the concert WAS still great.) Speak up!
