October 2008 Seldom have there been more competitive candidates for career opportunities. BUT people ARE being hired, despite the stock market, despite the housing debacle, despite the pending election! To surpass the competition, job searchers must carry themselves to the top of the heap by attending to careful checklists. Details matter. Be prepared to be very specific about your capabilities and strengths. You must have strategic examples readily available to explain why you are the best possible choice. Words matter. You’ve all been watching the political scene, observing the work of many talented political speechwriters. (Yes, many times the most successful candidate is a product of having been able to hire and deliver the words of the most gifted speechwriters!) Be careful to say exactly what you can contribute. Be honest. Be tactful. Cleverness matters. Put yourself in the best places to make the most likely connections for job search success. Meet the right decision makers. Offer timely help. If you’re not getting yourself and your message in front of influential organizational leaders, they’ll be thinking of someone else when it’s time to make a hiring decision or recommendation. Be prepared to be out there and out there and out there. Persistence matters. Keep executing these tactics, day in, day out. Don’t allow your attention and energy to wane. I don’t simply mean that you should spend more time toiling away in front of your computer. Get up, get out and get your strong, detailed, well strategized job search fully executed. That will make the difference between the bystanders and the leaders!
