November 2006 What’s on the best companies’ wish lists this holiday season? It’s gift-giving season! Maybe it’s time to give yourself the gift of a new career. Job searchers often have assessed what they want from their career and what characteristics they wish an employer would have as they seek a new opportunity. They want a combination of salary, benefits, growth, flexibility, challenge, responsibility, etc. They might not, however, have particularly thought about the needs of the EMPLOYER! A careful evaluation of the wish list of the best employers would be an appropriate job search step. We can start out with the simplest and most profound employer requirement: Help them MAKE money! Help them SAVE money! I haven’t heard of an organization yet that has hired a single employee for any other fundamental reason! Do YOU have a track record of documented value? What difference have you made to your prior employers, and why should you be the right choice now? What track record do you have in effectiveness in your function? Why should they believe that you’re any different or better than the existing people they have, or the people that are competing with you for an open need? Top talent! For a fair price! Dedication to the company mission! That’s what most excellent employers want. They’ve identified the characteristics of what defines top talent in their industry. They’re willing to pay a fair price for this talent, and they want to retain the best people. They’ve illuminated a well-thought out organizational mission. Are YOU the right choice for them?
