Get out the career measuring tape, and make an evaluation of how your career is "working out" for you! Ask yourself these key questions:

  • How's my income shaping up?
  • Do I like what I do?
  • Do I enjoy the people with whom I work?
  • Do I like my surroundings?
  • Is my commute manageable?
  • Do I enjoy the travel that is demanded of me?
  • Is my work appropriately challenging?
  • Do I have opportunity for advancement that fits my needs?
  • Does my job fit my family and outside interests?

If your answer is "no" to more of these questions than you should tolerate, then you need to ask yourself a few more questions:

  • Do I know what kinds of positions would suit me better?
  • Can I get in the doors to talk to the right people?
  • Do I know how much I'm worth?
  • Do I have a resume that really features my abilities?
  • Do I interview strategically, and turn those interviews into offers?
  • Do I negotiate for what I'm worth?
  • Do I have a plan for my career future?

A productive career needs its pulse checked too, just like our hearts. Studies have shown that many people are "barely breathing", while others are feeling great. So shed the heavy burden of an under-performing job, and get your talents up to pace. No one wants to feel that it's just another day on the treadmill. So get a great resume, find those organizations whose needs match your skills, be paid appropriately for the service you're providing, and hit the career growth path running!
